Repair or replace — ask for both
- If you were only offered a replacement, ask what a repair would cost and how long it might last. You may still choose replacement, but you'll be choosing with the full picture.
- Ask what specifically failed and how it was tested.
What a complete HVAC quote spells out
- The exact brand, model number and efficiency rating of the equipment.
- How the system was sized for your home, rather than matched to the old unit by default.
- Whether permits, removal of the old unit, duct changes, thermostat and electrical work are included.
- Separate equipment and labor warranties, and who registers the equipment warranty.
Frequently asked questions
How many HVAC quotes should I get?
Getting at least two or three lets you see whether the scope and equipment recommendations agree. Compare like-for-like equipment and included work, not only the total.
Why do HVAC quotes vary so much?
Quotes often differ in equipment brand and efficiency, system size, and what installation work is included. Line those up before comparing prices.
Are rebates or tax credits included in the price?
Sometimes quotes show prices after rebates you have to apply for yourself. Ask whether any rebate is already deducted, who applies for it, and what happens if it isn't approved.
